A Quick History of Pixel Gun 3D

PG3D turned 12 this year (still can’t believe it!), and after all these years it has become not just a game, but a whole Pixel Universe with rich lore, interesting characters (both heroes and villains), enormous gun arsenal, and tons of various modes. But how did it all start? And how has it changed over the years? Let’s take a quick ride through the past, present, and future of Pixel Gun 3D.

1. The Beginning: 2013-2017

So, let’s start from the beginning—when did Pixel Gun 3D come out? The answer is May 2, 2013—which would be our first stop. Some say the game was made by a solo dev named Alex Krasnov, but here’s the twist: that guy doesn’t exist. It was just the name of the account that published the game. In reality, it was a small team of developers who created Pixel Gun 3D. By the way, you can check more fun facts like this here

So, in May of 2013, the world saw Pixel Gun 3D, a first-person shooter, where you played as Pixel Man (who’s also known as Newbie) and fought monsters on the Deadly Arena map. There was no multiplayer yet, but you had Pixelgun as your only weapon, Pixel Gun 3D zombies as your enemies, and survival as your main goal.

Later that same year, the arsenal started to grow—Uzi, Shotgun, Wizard Wand, and more. Each weapon got its own attributes, and fresh maps were introduced in almost every update. Soon enough, multiplayer and new modes showed up too, including Pixel Gun 3D story mode, where Pixel Man wakes up in the midst of the apocalypse and tries to find out what’s going on. It was just the beginning—but what a start!

Let’s move to our next stop—2014-2017. During these years, PG3D kept evolving—new maps, modes, campaign chapters, and features kept rolling in. For instance, the gadgets were added to the game, including potions that provided certain buffs. However, only the OG players remember those, as they didn't stay in the game.

But other stuff that was added back then is still part of the game today. We’re talking about:

  • Gems
  • Flag Capture, Team Fight, and other modes
  • Eggs and Pets
  • Lotteries
  • And more

Players also helped shape PG3D—some of their gun ideas and sketches actually made it into the game! The Flower Power weapon is just one example. This tradition’s still alive, by the way, and one of the recent instances is the Gargoyle Shotgun, featured in the Ruby Division. The weapon is based on the concept pitched by a pixelgunner named Emmy. So yeah, if you’ve got some ideas too, don’t keep them to yourself!

2. Growing Stronger: 2018-2024

Next on our journey—2018. It was the year when the brand-new Pixel Gun 3D Battle Royale mode dropped. Now anyone could experience the thrill of heated battles for a chance to be the last pixelgunner standing. That’s also when the Battle Pass debuted, which would later be known as Pixel Pass.

In 2019-2020, among other things, we explored the fourth Campaign world, got introduced to the Trader’s Van, visited the city of pixels and dreams during the Cyberpunk Season, and hunted down the Imposter in the respective mode. No shortage of action!

During 2021 and 2022, the game got loads of fresh content, including new Pixel Gun 3D maps, seasons, modes, events, and interface updates, which you can see today. And in 2023, PG3D celebrated its 10th anniversary!

The next year was as eventful as the previous ones, but it gave us something many had been waiting for—the Pixel Gun 3D PC Edition. From that moment, you could choose how you want to play your favorite game.

3. Pixel Gun 3D Today

We’ve made it to the final stop—2025. This year, we celebrated PG3D’s 12th birthday, and now the game has over 1,500 weapons, 100+ maps, 10+ modes, and, of course, millions of pixelgunners who love and play Pixel Gun 3D every day.

As for the future—we’ve got big plans. Not only are we dropping more exciting content, but we’re also expanding the Pixel Universe with a full sequel—Pixel Gun 2! Yeah, it’s happening. More details are coming soon, so stay tuned!

That’s our quick little Pixel Gun 3D game history tour. Thanks for being part of the journey—catch you later in the arena!
